Hidden Oaks
Near Oak Creek, Wisconsin The City of Oak Creek, Wisconsin is located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in the southeast corner of Milwaukee County and adjacent to the City of Milwaukee. The population was 28,456 at the 2000 census.
Oak Creek, with its 28.4 square miles of area, enjoys an enviable location in the
Midwestern U.S.. Not only is Oak Creek a part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area, but it is only 85 miles from the heart of Chicago and 330 miles from Minneapolis both via Interstate 94. Oak Creek residents enjoy the suburban and rural atmosphere while, at the same time, taking advantage of the urban services provided by metro Milwaukee, including an abundance of professional sports and cultural activities.
Before the 1800's, the entire Midwestern U.S. region was known as the Northwest Territory, visited by traders, trappers, and Native Americans, who came to better hunting and fishing grounds. The only means of travel was by foot or horseback, oxen or horse drawn vehicle. There were only rough trails which followed the lake shore from Fort Dearborn (now known as Chicago) to Fort Howard (now known as Green Bay). The most used of these trails, known as "Military Road," led around stumps of cut trees, through swamps, over ravines and hills - slow and tedious travel at best.
In 1838, word had reached the communities along the east coast that the government was opening up land in southeastern Wisconsin for sale at $1.25 per acre - rich, fertile land prairie-like and forested and with good water supply. Early European explorers to the region included Elihu Higgins, John Fowle and the Dibley and McCreedy families. Elihu sent word back to his father-in-law, Oliver Rawson, to bring his family of eleven. These pioneers claimed great areas of land along the creek and along the lakeshore and built homes, cleared land to farm and began foundations of a settlement. Because the area was around a deep beautiful stream with an abundance of white oak trees, they decided to name the settlement Oak Creek.
Today, the City of Oak Creek has 22 named neighborhoods and 24 playgrounds and parks. The residential neighborhoods are serviced by the six elementary (K-5) schools; two middle schools and the Oak Creek High School of the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District. These facilities also serve the neighborhoods for other cultural, recreational and social activities, as does the Oak Creek Community Center. The neighborhoods exhibit the city's goal of housing diversity through single family homes, apartments, duplexes, mobile homes and condominiums. The vast majority of the city's housing has been constructed since Oak Creek's incorporation in 1955.
